The Rev. Dr. Angela Ferree - Deacon at Church of the Good Shepherd and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Town & Country and Ballwin
This reflection is part of a series celebrating women in ministry, June 2022.
As a deacon, ordained in December 2021, my formation and those involved in it are vivid indeed. Certainly Deacon Betty Bowen at Trinity, St. Charles comes foremost to mind. She served as my mentor for my field placement and has remained a close friend. She inspired me with her deep faith, her practical common sense, and her strength of character. Would that I will be able to emulate these qualities.
My instructors at the Episcopal School for Ministry demonstrated devotion to the church and caring for us, students in their charge. Particularly, I cherish the time spent with Fr. Marshall Crossnoe for his deep knowledge of his field — history -- and his caring nature, and Instructor Barbara Willock for her vast knowledge of the Bible and her skill in preparing us to preach. I carry their legacy in my heart and in my ministry.
As Bishop Deon spoke with Josh [Huber] and myself before our ordination on December 18, 2021, his emphasis was on “love my people.” This has come naturally to me, and it truly is life giving. I love the people the bishop has requested that I serve. I think that caring must radiate from me. There is the person who follows me down the hall to share her anguish. There are others who confide in me. There are those who donate generously to a deacon’s discretionary fund. However, sadly politics confounds our ministry at times. Then the Holy Spirit must enter in and bring us peace.
