March 30: Thursday in the Fifth Week of Lent
Read
Genesis 17:1–8 | I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
Pray
O Instigator of Eternity,
You name us ancestors of future generations.
You call us foundations of future faith.
You claim us stewards of future sacred story.
Haunt us we pray with unfished stories,
untold tales, and uncompleted tasks.
Make us mindful of those yet to come,
That we may redeem the time we are given;
All for long expected Love’s sake. Amen.
Reflect
What does the future hold?
Scientists and demographers tell us that the future is 10 years away. We measure the future in decades, and we plan for what might be possible or probable within that time.
We don’t of think of the future 100 years from now or even 1000 years from now. In part we cannot fathom a time without “me” being present in the future. But God calls us to live the now looking towards the distant future. God establishes a covenant with us for generations to come. It means that we must not just think about ourselves, but look towards the future of our children’s children.
What we do today will impact those who come tomorrow. We may not know what the future holds, but we do know who holds the future.
Do
Plant a tree or a seedling. Dedicate it to the future generation.
