March 15: Wednesday in the Third Week of Lent
Read
Deuteronomy 4:1–2,5–9 | But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children's children.
Pray
Mercifully grant us, O God,
the spirit of Esther, that we may be willing
to risk it all for an unwritten future;
the spirit of Deborah, that we may
discover wisdom and discern your will;
the spirit of Miriam, that we may
remember to dance even in disaster;
the spirit of Elizabeth, that we may
sing your praises even in our disbelief;
the spirit of Mary Magdalene, that we may
be witnesses to your amazing grace;
the spirit of Mary the Godbearer, that in song we may
turn the world upside down.
Grant us a portion of their spirit, that we may
transform the world in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflect
We are curators of the past and stewards of the future.
We don’t often think of the things we do today as having an impact on the future, but throughout Scripture the people of God are repeatedly called to think of two generations after them. To care for your children’s children is to be informed and aware of how our actions will be received by those who come after us.
Jesus, in his earthly ministry, called his followers to walk in love. To be centered in love is an act of hope for generations to come.
Do
Plant seeds or a tree. Spend some time with something that will outlive you. Pray for the future.
