Get to Know: Trinity Episcopal Church, St. James
The congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church in St. James takes pride in its history, but is looking toward the future.
William James, who founded the town of St. James, was a member at Trinity Church. James and his family played an important role in the building of the church. James' granddaughter, Lucy Wortham James, became a noted philanthropist in the area. In 1923, Lucy had a stone shell built around the original 1893 frame church.
The Rev. Kevin McGrane, Priest-in-Charge at Trinity, says those historic connections may still be what most identifies the church to its surrounding community.
"The issue is that the church is seen as a historical site. But we’re more than that – we’re a congregation," Rev. Kevin said. "We’re working right now to reach out beyond being a historical place to become a vibrant member of the community."
Trinity is on a slow but steady mission to build ties to their community by making donations to local charities, working with other churches in town, and by placing a new blessing box on their property. The blessing box not only offers food for hungry adults and families in town, but high school students often stop on their way home from school (which is directly across the street from the church) for a snack.
The parish's motto to love God, love each other, and love their neighborhood, is on full display during Sunday morning worship. This warm and friendly congregation takes extra time to greet each other during the Peace and shares personal prayer requests along with joyful news during the announcements. The congregation also gathers for Wednesday evening Bible and book discussions.
Although the historic roots of Trinity will always play an important role in the parish, Rev. Kevin says this small congregation is looking to the future with joy and enthusiasm. "Our life is not behind us, it's in front of us."
