Today's readings:Psalm 85:8-13; Isaiah 45:5-8, 18-25; Luke 7:19-23
Today in Advent we rejoice because the Lord is near to us. The savior we have been seeking is found not among the powerful or as a conquering leader, but serving the weak and the outcast, the humble and powerless. John the Baptist sends two disciples who ask Jesus, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?” The answer has already been given in signs, and now Jesus uses words: “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.”
Through his actions and his words, we know Jesus as the embodiment of mercy and compassion. He demonstrates Isaiah’s words: “I am the Lord, and there is no other.”
Psalm 85 speaks to me and for me. “I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him.” Truly, in Jesus, “Mercy and truth have met together.”
