In the Episcopal church, Advent is defined as a time of waiting and preparation for both the celebration and the return of Jesus in the second coming. As a member of the altar guild, myself and another member have been responsible for preparing the church for Advent services for several years. I feel fortunate that I have this time to decorate the church, prepare the altar for communion each week and have the additional time for my spiritual preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ during the Advent season.
So many things happen during the Advent season that bring joy. The decoration of the church with poinsettias, wreaths, trees and candles is so beautiful. The presence of the advent wreath symbolizes the eternity of God and the lighting of its candles the expectation, hope and finally the arrival of our Messiah is displayed. I am happy to see the children’s play on Christmas Eve. The church teaches them about the birth of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas. Let’s not forget the beautiful Christmas music that fills the church with joy.
With so much violence, evil and unrest in this world, Advent is the perfect time to reflect, pray, sing and enjoy the love of family and friends as we celebrate and anticipate Christ’s birth.
