Quarterly Gathering of Diocesan Religious
by Br. Franklin Klein, OP
Members of Religious Orders and Communities in The Diocese of Missouri gathered virtually via Zoom on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3 as they were led in the Liturgy of “The Transitus”, the traditional Franciscan Commemoration of the Eve of the Feast of St. Francis, by the Brothers and Sisters who are members of The Order of Saint Francis (OSF) and the Third Order of The Society of Saint Francis (SSF).
The word “Transitus” means crossing, going over, passage. The commemoration marks the vigil of St. Francis of Assisi’s death and his birth into eternal life. Francis wasn’t afraid of death. He named her “Sister Death” and met the Lord with joy and peace. The brothers and sisters who were left behind and all Franciscans who have followed the Poor Man of Assisi treasure this perfect lesson – meeting God with gratitude and song.
There were, readings and prayer, music – the “Canticle of The Sun” sung as a beautiful solo response between the text of the readings by Franciscan Adrienne Dillon, a homily delivered by Rivendell Community Guardian Dn. Barbi Click, as well as treat to share afterward sent by snail mail in advance by Franciscan Neil Tumber. One of Francis’ followers was a Roman noblewoman; one of his closest companions, Francis designated her “Brother Jacoba” so that her presence among the brothers at his bedside wouldn’t cause scandal. “Brother Jacoba” brought his favorite treat, almond cookies, to his deathbed. On this night, Franciscans traditionally savor a taste of the kindness of Br. Jacoba to her friend Francis of Assisi.
