ECW News: Women of Diocese on Retreat
Submitted by Kathleen McDonald
On two gloriously sunny days in October, the Episcopal Women of our diocese held a spiritual retreat on the lovely grounds of Marianist Retreat Center.
Using the theme of Encountering God in Nature our retreat leader, Mother Leslie Scoopmire of St. Martin’s, presented many encounters with God found in science, scripture, art, music, theology, poetry and the participants’ own personal experiences. Many inspired women left with names of poets, theologians, and musicians we’ll be looking up soon!
The grounds of Marianist Center, located on the bluffs of the Al Foster Trail near Highway 109, provided the perfect location for meditation, encountering, or just breathing. The retreat included several worship services held around the retreat center, including Night Prayer at the fire pit.
This year’s retreat was focused on nature, on creation and spirituality. There were also two traditional activities for our annual retreat: our annual meeting and our Outreach Project. The Outreach Project is a favorite of ECW members in our diocese. When a participant checks in to the retreat, she brings a small contribution for the ministry highlighted at this retreat. In October women brought items for the Blessings Box at All Saints, Farmington. Now this small parish with a big mission has help from the women of the diocese in providing non-perishable foods as well as personal care items for their community neighbors. The weekend was a perfect celebration of both the spiritual side of Episcopal women and the chance to support another ministry in a big way.
