A Thanksgiving Note from the Bishop-elect
Dear Friends in the Diocese of Missouri,
Author Anne LaMott says that there are three types of prayer, “help, thanks and wow.” Since the election on Saturday I have at some point prayed each prayer in turn. “Wow” has been most frequent. My family and I have been overwhelmed by the prayers, well wishes, support, and love we have received from members of the Diocese and around the world.
My 14-year-old self could not have dreamed or imagined this day. I am more keenly aware of the great cloud of witnesses -our spiritual ancestors- who sacrificed and gave of themselves over time, to make this possible. Our God is truly a wonder-working God!
As you are gathering with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, I am so very thankful for you, and your witness to God’s abiding love in calling me to serve with you as the Eleventh Bishop of Missouri. The Holy Spirit has brought us all to this day for such a time as this and I am grateful to the Search, Transition and Standing Committees for their gracious hospitality, careful preparation, and loving-kindness along this journey.
I am especially thankful for the leadership of Bishop Wayne and the Christ-centered willingness of Stacey and George and their families in offering themselves to the process of discernment and discovery.
You have inspired me in countless ways along this journey and I am convinced that God will continue to move us from strength to strength, as together we seek to follow Jesus. Know that I am holding you in my prayers.
My husband Jhovanny and I, along with our family, are excitedly looking forward to being with you in the New Year as we continue the holy work of transition.
May God continue to richly bless and keep in all ways and a happy Thanksgiving.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Deon K. Johnson
