From Dr. Carter Whitson, member of the Bishop Search and Nominating Committee

The Bishop Search and Nominating Committee has just held its first meeting. There is still a lot of work to do and decisions to make. One of the first and most important decisions will happen at each parish's annual meeting this January 2019--the election of Diocesan Convention Delegates. This year, delegates will elect the 11th Bishop of Missouri.

Our next bishop, like the previous ten, will be the voice for, and to, the people of eastern Missouri, and not just Episcopalians. Before they cast a vote, delegates will need to understand the hopes, needs, and desires of their parishes and communities, as well as the spiritual gifts and qualities of the candidates to be presented. This will take time and much prayerful consideration during the coming year.

As it is planned currently, members of the Bishop Search and Nominating Committee will hold "holy conversations" with each parish and convocation this winter. These listening sessions will help the committee discern those spiritual gifts and qualities to seek. These listening sessions will also help delegates continue the conversations locally throughout the year.

Please be mindful of this responsibility when deciding to run for Diocesan Convention Delegate. As the Grail Knight warned Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, "Choose wisely."
