Recently, the Diocese of Missouri was invited by the American Hospital Association (AHA) to partner with it in its national violence awareness campaign, #HAVhope, and recruit other dioceses to this effort.

In an April 6 letter to the president and chief executive officer of AHA, Bishop Smith enthusiastically offered his support. In addition to his endorsement, he committed to:

  • encouraging community partnerships between local Episcopal parishes and hospitals on issues related to violence prevention;
  •  providing links to our respective web sites to promote efforts to reduce violence; and
  •  regularly sharing stories and photographs highlighting diocesan, congregational, individual and hospital violence prevention initiatives.

AHA will launch #HAVhope with a national day of awareness on Friday, June 9, 2017. Hospitals throughout the country will be sponsoring a variety of activities to focus public attention on the root causes of violence and its prevention. For information on how your parish might partner with a local hospital in this vitally important work, contact The Rev. Marc D. Smith, Ph.D., bishop’s deputy for gun violence prevention, at (314) 452-3378 or cotterboatworks@aol.com.
