The beloved vicar of Trinity Episcopal Church in St. James, Missouri, the Rev. J. Stephen Barber, died last night of complications from surgery.

A graduate of the Episcopal School for Ministry and Education for Ministry (EfM), he was ordained to the diaconate on Dec. 20, 2006 and to the priesthood on July 7, 2007 by the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith. He was named the Vicar of Trinity Church on July 8, 2007, a position he has held since.

Steve was active in diocesan leadership, serving on convocation and the Commission on Ministry. He had a heart for the poor, the down on their luck, and the unchurched, and with his parish worked with local homeless and hungry as well as supporting mission outside of the country.

The son of a preacher, he offered a gentle hospitality to all who crossed his path. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be shared here when known. Please pray for Steve and his wife Glenda, their children and family, and the people of Trinity Church.

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord;
And let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace, Amen.

[Updated, 4/21, 9 pm] The funeral for the Reverend Steve Barber is set for 1 pm on Saturday, April 30 at Trinity Episcopal Church in St. James. Visitation will precede the service, 10 am to noon, at the rectory next door to the church.
