Forming Disciples for the Ministry of the Church
The Episcopal School for Ministry convenes as a community of formation in the Diocese of Missouri. Its programs and courses offer opportunities for prayer, study, and mutual support, all with a view toward enriching students' vision and skills for ministry.
Each weekend that ESM gathers is structured by Morning, Evening, and Noonday Prayer, and class time. The learning is challenging but accessible to all, for ESM welcomes students with advanced academic backgrounds and others with little educational experience after high school. The school helps students achieve a variety of academic and training goals, including education and training for licensed lay ministry; enhancement of specific ministries in the Church; academic preparation for ordination to diaconate or priesthood; deeper engagement with theological reflection, liturgical worship, or mission service.
Programs and Courses
ESM presently offers two sequential and unified courses of study:
The Program for Diaconal Formation
The Program for Diaconal Formation is a two year course of study, designed for persons seeking ordination as a deacon in the Episcopal Church.
The Program for Theological Formation
The Program for Theological Study is three-year course of study, designed for persons seeking a deeper understanding of Christian theology, more informed and meaningful engagement in liturgical worship, and enhanced service in Christian mission. The program serves those seeking priestly ordination in the Episcopal Church.
ESM also offers periodic, stand-alone courses. These courses often meet for a single day or a single term, and cover topics that are timely, practical, and enriching.
Format and Location
During the current health crisis, as we continue to comply with Stay at Home directives in order to further public health and safety, the Episcopal School for Ministry is meeting online, via video conferencing. We anticipate returning to "regular meeting mode," in which we convene on the campus of Eden Seminary in Webster Groves, Missouri for classes, worship, and meals together. Overnight accommodations will be available when we return to Eden.
