Elizabeth Dyer Convocation

Convocation Namesake:
Elizabeth Dyer (1906-1996) was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Ladue and was the first woman lay delegate to General Convention in 1946. Her seating was almost immediately challenged at the convention. But Judge Augustus N. Hand, a lay deputy of New York, argued that the interpretation of ‘layman' was all-inclusive. So she was allowed voice and vote. Three years later, the House of Deputies once again denied the seating of women at convention. The argument continued until 1970, when women were finally admitted to the House of Deputies.
