Venable Park Rededication
Saturday, September 18, 2021, 1:00 PM
The City of Creve Coeur has rescheduled the rededication of Dr. H. Phillip Venable Memorial Park for Saturday, Sept. 18, 1-4 p.m.
The City voted to rename the park in 2019 after members of the public - including several members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Creve Coeur - called attention to the history of the park's origins to the city council.
That history shows the land for the park was originally owned in the 1950s by Dr. H. Phillip Venable and his wife, Katie W. Venable. The city used the power of eminent domain to acquire the land, preventing the Venables from building a home on the land due to their race.
In approving the name change, the City of Creve Coeur acknowledged and apologized for the actions of their predecessors.
The Venables were active members in churches of the Diocese of Missouri. We are grateful to the members of St. Timothy's and all who took a stand to bring about this important recognition.
