Public Advocacy Update: Call your senators and urge opposition to SB 39 and SB 49

by the Rev. Dr. Teresa Mithen Danieley
Diocesan Missioner for Public Advocacy

Feb. 28, 2023

While hundreds of thousands of Missourians suffer without adequate education, healthcare or housing, some in the Missouri state legislature continue to focus their attention on persecuting a small number of trans youth, their families and their caregivers. Jesus calls us to proclaim the Good News that all people are beloved by God and that this persecution of the little ones will not stand.

I implore all Missourians who read this to Call your State Senators immediately and ask them to Oppose Senate Bill 39 (bans trans youth from participating in sports with their peers) and Oppose Senate Bill 49 (bans gender affirmation health care to trans youth). Use the Missouri Senate Legislative Look Up to find your State Senator, then call them and email them to urge opposition to SB 39 & 49.

CLERGY - Please sign up HERE to build a broad network of clergy voices from around the state of Missouri to fight these bills and to speak out against the harm being done each time these bills come to the floor. Already in this legislative session, clergy have provided important testimony to lawmakers and pastoral support to witnesses at the Capitol. Many of the bill sponsors and supporters invoke Christian language as reasons why it is important to support these bills. Your voice and presence in support of LGBTQIA+ Missourians, including the children and families targeted by most of these bills, provides an important counterweight to that narrative. Please share the form with ecumenical and interfaith colleagues. Direct link: https://forms.gle/NLitvXjW1sYhLnNK6
Thank you.

Approximately 10,000 people throughout Eastern and Central Missouri find their faith home with us. About three-quarters of our members are in the metro St. Louis area, but our diocese reaches much farther than St. Louis. You will find more than 40 Episcopal churches, missions and faith communities as far north as Kirksville, as far west as Columbia, and as far south as Poplar Bluff (and many points in between).

If you are looking for a church home or a just a faith community to visit, we invite you to explore The Episcopal Diocese of Missouri.
