March 28: Tuesday in the Fifth Week of Lent
Read
Numbers 21:4–9 | The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food."
Pray
Balance us Creating God,
Balance our sunshine with refreshing rain,
Balance our joy with holy sorrow,
Balance on compassion with righteous indignation,
Balance our comfortability with a passion for justice,
Balance our need to be right with hallowed listening;
Lead us from animosity to anger at injustice, oppression, and division that we may be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Reflect
What have you done for me lately?
God’s people seem to have a severe case of situational amnesia. No matter how many times God delivers the people, provides them with everything they need, defends them against enemies, they show how to forget God’s goodness in times of trial.
When the storms of life rage, the people of God run. Not only do they run, but they find ways to complain to God about bringing them the time of trial. God has broad shoulders and the patience of, well, God! No matter how stiff-necked, God does not give up on us.
God is faithful. Even when we forget God, when we fail to remember God’s presence, during the difficult times, God never forgets us. That is the comfort and the challenge of our faith.
