March 26: The Fifth Sunday of Lent: Wait
How many of us really like to wait? We live in a culture of instant gratification. Waiting is passé. We spend hours on hold trying to talk to a real living, breathing human being when we call a utility company.
We get frustrated when there is traffic on our commute. We get annoyed when our food is late. We don’t like to wait. But there is value in waiting. God is there in the waiting place.
Jesus reminds us that ours is a God of surprises.
The challenge is that if we don’t spend time in the waiting place, we miss God, we miss the signs of God’s love breaking into our world in unexpected and surprising ways and people.
We are called during this season to pay attention as we wait for God to be made real and manifest in our world. The problem is that we don’t want to wait, but God calls us to slow down, to be vigilant.
So our challenge is to spend these days waiting and watching with the disciples, watching for signs of God’s love breaking into our world, to abide with Jesus as we reclaim the kingdom of God one inch at a time, one act at a time, one kindness at a time.
