Journey Through Advent: Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021
by the Rev. Laurie Anzilotti,
Vicar, St. Francis Episcopal Church in Eureka
Today's Readings:
Psalm 25:1-9; Jeremiah 33:14-16; Luke 21:25-36
Spring. Summer. Fall. Winter. This is often how we order the seasons: from the new life of Spring through the death of Winter.
But what if we thought about the seasons as beginning with Winter? For new human life unfolds in the darkness of the womb. The bird and the butterfly in the dim light of the egg and cocoon. Seeds ripen in the rich, dark soil.
We are moving toward Winter solstice and the darkest day of the year. Can we reimagine this season as the fertile darkness instead of a time of death? Can we think about it as a sacred season that permits time for unfolding and ripening that in turn enables the growth and the work of Spring?
May the darkness of winter be a time to follow Christ’s call to leave behind, “the anxieties of day-to-day life” (Lk. 21: 34 CEB). May this season of Advent allow us to “stay alert at all time praying that you are strong enough to escape everything that is about to happen and to stand before the Human One” (Lk 21: 36 CEB).
