St. John's Church in Eolia will conclude regular 2022 services with the Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson officiating at the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, Oct. 2. Immediately following the service there will be an annual "Homecoming Basket Luncheon" in the churchyard. It has been a long held tradition to combine the Bishop's annual visitation with a celebratory meal. As families have expanded and often become geographically scattered, this annual event, held the first Sunday of October, has become a glue of sorts.
The descendants and friends of members of St. John's or of souls laid to rest in the enclosing cemetery gather for what is always a merry time. Tables and chairs are pulled from car trunks, pick-up beds, and the back of the church. Tablecloths are laid. A banquet table is filled with the individual offerings. It must be said that a gentle bit of ego benefits all as cooks try to bring their most impressive dishes. The congregation gathers, hopefully in the sunshine, and the Bishop offers a grace. It is a moment touched with the awareness that we have the company of many years enveloping us. Continuity through good times and tough times is a foundation for a grand feast.
St. John's welcomes all visitors. We are a wee congregation with a graceful old church standing firmly under the oaks and hickories with a cemetery alongside. Our spot evokes peace. Or so we have been told countless times... as if we haven't known through experience. Please join us. As we search for a role and for service in the coming years, we need the participation of others. We have something to share and visitors who see us with fresh eyes can only enlarge our understanding of what we have.
