Get to Know: St. Francis Episcopal Church, Eureka
St. Francis Episcopal Church in Eureka is one of the youngest congregations in The Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. Their story began in 1989, when two parishioners of St. Michael and St. George, Paris and Mike Coffey, received approval from the Bishop's Deputy to start a mission church in Eureka. The first worship service was held on January 7, 1990.
St. Francis has used many different facilities to hold worship services, including the Eureka Methodist Church, the Six Flags Ramada Inn, the LaSalle Institute, Blevins Elementary School, and the Masonic Lodge. On December 3, 2017, the mission celebrated and dedicated a beautiful new church building of its own on land adjacent to a new neighborhood development.
That neighborhood is now booming with new homes and an elementary school. And that connection to community remains an important part of St. Francis’ vision to be a growing and inviting community of Christians known for meaningful worship and faithful service to God, our neighbors, and each other.
Outdoor concerts and outdoor worship services help connect the congregation to the neighborhood. St. Francis members also participate in many community events, like the Eureka Days Parade and appreciation days for teachers and the police department.
The congregation at St. Francis is also dedicated to serving those in need. They have weekly food collections that go to the Eureka Food Pantry and they have participated in the Trinity Hot Lunch program with Trinity Episcopal Church in the Central West End for several years. St. Francis now has plans to begin a similar food ministry to serve the hungry in Eureka and Pacific.
“St. Francis’ is on the road to showing compassion for the hungry in our area. This is God’s work,” writes Donna Bernert, Coordinator of Service and Justice, on St. Francis’ website.
The Rev. Laurie Anzilotti serves as the Vicar of St. Francis. Sunday mornings at this mission church are buzzing with worship services, adult forums, confirmation classes, and Godly Play lessons for children. And with St. Francis as their patron saint, you’ll likely find a few four-legged friends on the grounds, as well!
