Get to Know: All Saints' Episcopal Church, Farmington
Farmington is a quaint town in Southeast Missouri with a picturesque courthouse in the middle of its historic town square. All Saints' Episcopal Church sits just a few blocks from downtown Farmington, offering a beautiful worship space and a warm welcome to all.
All Saints' was founded in 1979 and became known as the "little blue church" just off Highway 69. The parish purchased new land and constructed a new church building in 2009. The new facility is marked by an abundance of lovely, clear windows that flood the worship space with light. The cross that sat atop the original church building now adorns a wall in the narthex of the new church, displayed in memory of a beloved All Saints' member.
The congregation is a tight-knit group that places a priority on community service. Each month, the group selects a specific need and asks for 40 donations of that item -- in January the parish collected 40 coats that were donated to a local women's and children's shelter. it's a tradition that began with the celebration of the parish's 40th anniversary and continues today.
A large blessing box sits prominently beside the church's front doors. All Saints' members and generous neighbors regularly donate nonperishable goods for the free pantry and the parish receives a grant from the Diocesan Task Force on Hunger to help keep the box stocked. Grateful neighbors who need a little extra help take what they need.
Along with these and other outreach efforts, All Saints' develops relationships with local residents and groups by sharing their church space. A local beekeeper maintains a hive on the church grounds to harvest honey and often shares jars of the sweet results with church members.
The Rev. Richard Wiskus serves as All Saints' vicar. He is a bi-vocational priest, also working full-time at the Southeast Missouri Mental Health Hospital, which is directly across the street from the church. He also serves as the priest-in-charge at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ironton, which is about 20 minutes from Farmington.
All Saints' celebrates Holy Eucharist with the Rev. Richard Wiskus on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of each month. The congregation leads morning prayer on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
