From the Archivist: Safe Deposit Box Checklist

FROM THE ARCHIVIST
To all Rectors, Vicars, Priests in Charge, Wardens, Treasurers
This is a test:
Does your congregation have a bank safe deposit box? If the answer is yes…
- Do you know where the key is?
- Do you know who the signers are?
- Do you have an inventory of what’s in your safe deposit box?
- Does anyone remember the last time the box was opened?
- Are bank fees assessed annually for the safe deposit box?
If you can answer all these questions positively you’re in good shape and you get gold stars!
All too often, safe deposit box issues have become serious problems. The safe deposit box is forgotten, the key is lost, no one knows what’s in it or maybe no one knows who the signers are or maybe all the signers are no longer members of the congregation or are deceased. And, of course, all this is discovered when you really, really, really need to find something that just might be in the safe deposit box, but there is no inventory so you can’t be sure.
Your next step is to have the box drilled which is not cheap, and usually takes time to arrange.
Please make this a check list at your annual vestry meeting. You don’t want surprises!
