History

The Diocese of Missouri can trace its roots back to the arrival of the first Episcopal priest in St. Louis in October 1819.The first known Episcopal service west of the Mississippi took place in St. Louis on Oct. 24, 1819, and also marked the first two baptisms into the Episcopal Church west of the Mississippi. The celebrant was the Rev. John Ward. Within a week, Ward had organized Christ Church parish, the very same Christ Church that serves today as the cathedral parish. The Episcopal presence in St. Louis was not a constant in those early years. Months and sometimes years would pass between services, contingent on the arrival of a priest.

Stay tuned, as a more complete History of the Diocese is being compiled for this website December 2007.
