St. Luke's Hospital

St. Luke's Episcopal-Presbyterian Hospital

Heeding their bishop's call for a "church hospital," a group of Episcopal physicians opened St. Luke's Infirmary in 1865. Offering a ministry to the sick and a free dispensary to the poor, the infirmary soon grew into a hospital, outgrowing not one, but three locations before relocating in 1903 to a site on Delmar in the heart of St. Louis.

In 1975, St. Luke's Hospital-West opened in Chesterfield. It was hoped that revenues generated by the second hospital in an affluent suburb would help support indigent care at St. Luke's Hospital in the city. That benefit was not realized and the old St. Luke's was put up for sale in 1984 and eventually sold.

The Rev. Renita heinzl, is director of Pastoral Care at St. Luke's. She can be reached at (314) 205-6173; or by e-mail at renita.heinzl@stlukes-stl.com.
