Worship at Rockwell House
Wednesday night worship
We meet Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. for our main weekly service.
Wednesday night worship has long been the center of our life together ... it's the time we all schedule everything else around. It's informal. We light some candles, push the furniture to the side and sit on the floor, sing, pray, talk and share the bread and wine of Eucharist. Many times, we'll have a meal beforehand. Afterwards, we hang out until people feel like leaving.
Student leadership in worship
The word "liturgy" comes from the Greek leiturgios, which quite literally means "the work of the people." Here at ECM, we believe that worship is something that all God's people have a part in-- it's not merely the special province of clergy or other "trained professionals."
There are plenty of ways for student to be involved in the liturgy. During the service we may have student readers, gospellers, musicians, intercessors (prayer-leaders), preachers, and more!
In addition to that, we have great opportunities for students to be involved with worship on the planning/visioning end, in our...
Liturgy/Music Team
The Lit/Music Team is made up of students who want to share their gifts and creativity to make our worship services special. We meet weekly with our chaplain Andrew, to discuss various aspects of liturgy, generate ideas for the current week's service, pick music, and make special changes which reflect the theme of the service that week. Creative "out-of-the-box" thinking is encouraged, as we try new and exciting things, while also respecting Anglican traditions. If you want to learn more about Episcopal worship, as well as help craft the worship of this particular community, The Lit/Music Team wants you!
The work of the Lit/Music team is invaluable, both in terms of a learning experience for students, and for the difference it makes in our services. Worship designed by students, for students: this isn't your grandma's Church. :)
Lead a Service
You can sign up to lead one of our services. This can be as simple as preaching the readings set out for that week in the lectionary, or as involved as designing a special liturgy and picking new readings to resonate with a theme or message you want to get across. With the help of the Liturgy/Music Team, you can craft a service that's really special; use your imagination! You'll have the chance to experience your leadership in our worship together; the only thing neccesarily "reserved" to the priest is saying the Eucharistic prayer and pronouncing the blessing!
