Bishop Smith and the Rev. Teresa Mithen Participated in the Metropolitan Congregations United Press Event
The Bishop, along with the Rev. Teresa Mithen spoke at a press conference this morning on the steps of the Old Courthouse. The press conference featured clergy from several denominations: Presbyterian, Catholic, Baptist, Jewish and Business Leaders who spoke about faith and the need to covenant with one another to protect affirmative action and work for racial justice, especially as it pertains to the 'so-called' civil rights ballot petition drive. Watch your local television news for coverage tonight. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was quoted several times, on this, the 40th anniversary of his death. The line used most was that we 'are tied together in a single garment of destiny' and because we share this destiny, we must work together to oppose any initiative which would try to destroy affirmative action in our state and in our culture. Bishop Smith and others emphasized the need to let people know about the deceptive practices supporters of this ballot are using to try to get people to sign in support of it. He said DO NOT be tricked into signing petitions for this destructive ballot; but if it does reach the November Ballot VOTE NO against it.
