Joplin: Two Reflections on this weekend’s trip and another opportunity to help

Reflection on the Joplin trip by Emily Bartlett

Going into the Joplin service trip, I knew I’d see things I didn’t want to see.

In the place where I’d spent so many summers, I knew I would have to face a part of it being leveled, flattened, destroyed. Nothing could possibly prepare me for what one sees in the six mile path the F5 tornado tore through the city.

Amongst all the destruction, one image was seared into my mind: the high school, with a wall ripped off so you could peer inside it like a dollhouse. Books still stood on the bookshelves, papers were still pinned onto the cork bulletin boards, desks still stood in neat, tidy rows… But the seemingly sturdy brick wall was gone, crumbled on the ground, causing the building to sag under its own weight. What if this storm had hit on a school day? What would have happened to the thousands of people in the high school building? Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

We are all quite proud to call ourselves the little church that said I should
Practice stability, bloom where we were planted and serve the neighborhood.
But all we knew to do was ramps up “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You” signs

With more signs, flyers, advertisements.

We learned that promotions of unpronounceable, unknown sects are not good news,
And even tastefully done fail to attract.

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Originally published in the August/September 2010 edition of Seek. Link to publication (PDF).

“Weather update,” crackled the voice on the walkie-talkie. The chance of storms prompted frequent weather reports and reminders of storm protocols from Camp Phoenix director the Rev. Emily Bloemker to her counselors and counselors-in-training (CIT). But the rain held and activities on the last full Friday of camp continued on schedule. (more…)
