Water + Grease = Hope, Reflections on WoH from Christ Church Cathedral (2009)

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

By Daniel Linck, cathedral parishioner. This article was originally published in Christ Church Cathedral’s newsletter.

On Memorial Day, May 25, about 20 riders left Lake Saint Louis to begin the 2009 Waters of Hope bicycle tour of our diocese.  The objective of the tour, now in its second year, is to raise money to benefit clean  water systems for Sudan and Swaziland.  The tour made its way to Hannibal, Kirksville, Columbia, Mexico, Jefferson City and Rolla, which is where I joined on Saturday.

“I am not sure I raised a dime for clean water in the Diocese of Lui, but I laughed, I cussed, I got wet, I shared hugs, I prayed, and I was touched by many of you and by many of the WOH riders,” Reflections from Trinity-Kirksville (2009)

The Day It Rained

by Krista Baker, Senior Warden

On Tuesday, May 26 it rained. The day began with a call from (Rector) Wallace. He tried to sound calm. The Waters of Hope bicyclists were coming to Kirksville, and he was concerned we would not have enough food. It rained. We prepared plenty of food. It rained.

Tuesday ended very late with Tim trying to spell “pimiento” cheese. He was patiently labeling sandwich bags for me as we prepared lunches for the next day. In between that first phone call and that last sandwich, I had a wonderful day full of great memory making moments. I am not sure I raised a dime for clean water in the Diocese of Lui, but I laughed, I cussed, I got wet, I shared hugs, I prayed, and I was touched by many of you and by many of the WOH riders. “WoH became that moment when we were in communion,” Reflections from Grace-Jeff City (2009)

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

originally published in Grace Episcopal Church, Jefferson City’s newsletter, The Messenger. Author is Lisa Fox,  photo taken by Melanie Jianakoplosof parishioners Matt Krause and Jeanie Bryant.

Seven days.  650 miles.  Some 40 bicyclists traversed the hills and valleys of eastern Missouri to raise money for clean water in Sudan and Swaziland from May 25-31.  And the members of Grace Episcopal Church played a key role in that initiative.

When the Waters of Hope cyclists cruised into the parish, their arrival was the culmination of several weeks of anticipation and preparation.  Jeanie Bryant (Chair of the Community Ministry Committee) expressed joy: “When the riders came spinning down High Street to our little corner of the world, they were greeted as brothers and sisters in Christ.  As they shared their stories of travel, we expanded our horizons.” (more…)

SULLIVAN – Joe Chambers has a passion for cycling. He can, and often does, ride for hours, pedaling thousands of revolutions and turning dozens of miles across town and country. It’s a personal interest, called to the road for exercise and the gratifying experience of achievement. He loves to ride. (more…)

A Challenging Century on Day Five Waters of Hope: Jefferson City to Rolla (2009)

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Great photos added from yesterday’s ride beginning at Calvary, Columbia with lunch at St. Matthew’s, Mexico, and rest stop at St. Alban’s Fulton, and hospitality at host Grace in Jeff City.

The pace for these centuries (100 mile rides) is brisk, and the riders appreciate all of the hospitality along the way. Water purification demonstrations at each evening stop (and afternoon on the 31st at the Cathedral) are encouraging great conversations. Every stop includes a presentation from the people of the parish to contribute to this fundraising effort. A short video of a presentation at St. Alban’s Fulton: http://www.vimeo.com/4900727

New photos from day four are online, and more from days two and three will be up later this morning. We’re gathering them at:

Today’s ride will stop at Trinity, St. James before winding up for the day at Christ Church, Rolla. Saturday is Rolla to St. Francis, Eureka, with lunch at St. John and St. James in  Sullivan. And Sunday the riders will be passing by St Martin’s Ellisville at doughnut time on their way into St Louis on Clayton Road. Arrival at the Cathedral around 10 am. We’ll be welcoming the riders and their gear into the procession at the 11:15 service. Ride organizers the Rev. Joe Chambers will preach and the Rev. Mitchell Smith (son of the Canon to the Ordinary Dan and Evelyn Smith) will participate in Pentecost celebration.

And they’re off! Waters of Hope cyclists leave Lake St Louis for Hannibal on Day One (2009)

Monday, May 25th, 2009

After a 7:00 a.m. breakfast and hospitality with parishioner of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Lake St. Louis and their Rector, the Rev. Jason Samuel, we celebrated Eucharist, the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith presiding. Service concluded, Bishop Smith removed his vestments, blessed the bikes and cyclists, then headed off with the riders north to Hannibal.
