Reports from Lui missioners

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Reading the mission team blogs one feels the sense of satisfaction with the work accomplished this trip. Our partnership is evolving, matching needs and interests of our Moru friends with talents and resources this diocese has to offer. Here are a few outtakes from these rich two weeks in the Episcopal Diocese of Lui.

Last post from Lui.(Dec. 2) They have wonderful, doable ideas that don’t involve raising funds for a tractor — more about all that from home. Then Sam, Marc, Robin, and Jennifer took off for Mundri and a chat with the World Harvest Mission ag folks, while the rest of us stayed in Lui. Vasco, Stephen, Gordon, Warren, Bishop Bullen, Wayne, and I sat for a long time discussing diocesan priorities and fundraising. This morning Susan and Ev presented school supply funds (we bought and distributed all we could!) and our art project supplies to Lunjini’s headmaster. We have the final tea party and goodbye at 5 pm, then we pack and go tomorrow — MAF flight at noon.

Two things that make me happy (Dec. 1). This is Evelyn in her element. One person — Ismail — asked to come and read with her. But when he came for the lesson, he brought two friends. Then two more showed up. I have never seen anyone happier in Lui than Evelyn teaching reading to adults. She did this yesterday and has another lesson scheduled for this afternoon…

Meeting Noel on the road (Nov. 30). Noel is coming to Lui tomorrow to meet with the bishop, and ask to stay in Lozoh. He has many great ideas and plans for his community after two years in Seminary in Nairobi, but very little resources for the coming year. He has not been at home to farm, and so has nothing in the storehouse. You never know who you will meet heading down the road in the bush…

Sunday Service (Nov. 30). We had drums, dancing and ululating. It was something I will never forget. Bishop Smith spoke about Isaiah 39 and the symbol of the crocus as a sign of promise and hope. We who are the church live in hope. Pray for the people of Sudan and for the team as we get ready to leave our brothers, sisters and children of Lui

Sunday (and Monday) in the park with George? (Nov. 30) We went to the site of the new diocesan center, where SUDRA had Sumadhura drill a well last May. Bishop Wayne blessed the site and sort of laid the cornerstone. The engineer who was coming to do it properly was delayed in Nairobi or Juba, so they’ll do it again later, but the symbolic act has occurred. Luckily he had his trusty archdeacon to hold his hat and stick…

Going to Lozoh (Nov. 29). When we first got here, it didn’t look like we would be able to get to Lozoh. The road is grown over with grass, and won’t be cleared for a few more weeks. But Debbie Smith spoke with Vasco Daniel and Darius Manyugu. Manyugug says he can find Lozoh, even through the grass. So, Deb and I will be able to get to Lozoh for Church tomorrow…

This November, two missioners from the Blackmore Vale Deanery in Salisbury, U.K., will join nine missioners from Missouri as we travel to Lui Diocese. We depart St. Louis the day after Diocesan Convention, and I am trying to remain calm in the face of countless details that a convention and a mission trip both require. (more…)

Fifth year of Trinity, St.Charles, bike-a-thon for Lui diocese (2009)

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

This past Saturday was a crisp, sunny autumn day on the Katy Trail, perfect for Bike for Bikes, the fifth bike-a-thon organized by the people of Trinity, St. Charles. While participation was down this year, fellowship was high. If you’ve not participated individually or with your parish, riders meet at the south end of Frontier Park and travel out for an hour then return.Youth and adults participate, water stops and checkpoints provided by the organizers, to keep participants safe and hydrated. After the ride everyone carpools back to Trinity for a great outdoor meal around a fire, the highlight being s’mores. Riders and churches contribute money for bicycles for the Diocese of Lui.

Trinity Rector Tamsen Whistler explained how this effort began. About six years ago when Bishop Bullen from Lui diocese was visiting, he stopped by Trinity on a Wednesday evening. He spoke about the civil war that had just concluded. He related the horrific story of his being removed from the cathedral at gun point by a young soldier, of thinking that he was going to be killed, of asking the soldier if they could pray together first, and of praying with the soldier in Arabic. In the silence surrounding the stories of the faithfulness and hope of the Christian people of Lui, a parishioner asked, “Bishop Bullen, is there something that we can do that would make a difference…something simple, something meaningful?” The Bishop replied that such a simple thing as providing bicycles would help enormously. Lui clergy often walk three to four hours between churches, on visits. Bicycles cut those hours dramatically.

Everyone at Trinity wanted to participate, particularly the youth. Being so close to Katy Trail, it seemed an obvious choice to ride bikes and tricycles and walk to raise funds for a few bicycles each year.

Over the past five years many parishes have taken turns supporting the effort. Trinity parish was also touched by the visits of the Rev. Stephen Dokolo, and claim to have introduced him to s’mores, which he pronounced as very good indeed. Dokolo is the Lui priest who was sponsored by our diocese to study at Eden Seminary, and has now graduated and returned to Lui Diocese. For several years Dokolo won the award for bike-a-thon participant from the farthest distance. Saturday those honors went to Bastian Tolksdorf, a 16 yr old from Ludwigsburg, Germany, who is in St. Charles as a part of their sister city program.

It’s not too late to support Bike for Bikes, even if you weren’t able to ride this year. Checks will be gratefully accepted at Trinity Episcopal Church, 318 S. Duchesne St. Charles, MO, 63301. On Saturday, riders received bright orange wristbands that read “Biking for Lui” and “Praying for Lui,” and there are wristbands left. Until the supply runs out, a minimum donation of $5 will secure one of the remaining wristbands. Please note on the check for Bike for Bikes and if you would like a wristband.

Missioners on 11/09 trip to Lui announced (2009)

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The next trip to Lui from the Diocese of Missouri is planned for November 22 to December 5, 2009. Leaving the day after diocesan convention and spending Thanksgiving in Lui, our missioners will include

  • Bishop George Wayne Smith
  • Rev. Dan Handschy of Advent, Crestwood
  • Rev. Anne Kelsey of Trinity, St. Louis
  • Rev. Susan Naylor of Emmanuel, Webster Groves
  • Mrs. Evelyn Smith of Christ Church Cathedral
  • Mr. Marc Vanacht of St. Timothy’s, Creve Coeur
  • Sam Christy of Holy Cross, Poplar Bluff
  • Deb Goldfeder of Advent, Crestwood
  • Debbie Smith of St. Timothy’s, Creve Coeur, and Mission Team Leader.

In addition to the nine Missourians, two missioners from the Blackmore Vale Deanery of England’s Salisbury Diocese will also travel to Lui in November, Anne Powell of Shillingstone, and a missioner yet to be named.

After several months of discussion and consideration, Blackmore Vale’s synod voted Monday, September 7th, to join with Missouri and Lui in a three-way companion relationship. Salisbury Diocese has had a 35-year link with the Province of Sudan, but up to now Blackmore Vale has not had much direct involvement. Bishop Bullen stayed in their deanery during the pre-Lambeth Sudan conference in the summer of 2008, and many in the deanery got to know him and became interested in developing a relationship. When Missouri’s companion diocese committee contacted Salisbury on Sudan matters, the Salisbury folks put Blackmore Vale in touch with the committee, and the relationship took off from there. The companion diocese committee is especially happy to be able to bring new friends to Lui and to bring the diocese of Missouri the opportunity to connect with congregations in England.

Our mission team leader, Debbie Smith, has recently joined the AFRECS board.  After her trip to Blackmore Vale’s synod meeting, she stopped in Washington D.C. for AFRECS board meeting, an advocacy workshop, and then had a meeting with Josh Kremer, one of Senator Bond’s staff. Debbie writes on her blog, Lulului, “He was a great listener and asked good questions — the whole experience was a vindication of everything I’ve always believed about democracy.” (More information and pictures from these trips on the blog.)

Our November mission trip plans include a primary-school art project, meetings with clergy and teachers, and consulting in both Lui and Juba on agriculture and parish nursing. Donations and prayers are always gratefully received.

A New Partnership
Tonight I went to the deanery synod meeting of Blackmore Vale deanery in Dorset, part of the English Diocese of Salisbury, where I had the joy of witnessing their unanimous vote to join with the Diocese of Missouri and the Diocese of Lui in a three-way relationship. I am excited about the opportunity to connect with the real-live modern-day English church and to enrich our relationship with our Moru friends in this way. It’s especially important to me that the partnership means a more immediate way to practice and demonstrate transparency, and that having a third culture in the mix will give us new perspective. Our new partners hosted Bishop Bullen last summer at the pre-Lambeth Sudan conference, and he worked his magic on them as he has on us. They have already been raising money for schools and one church’s Mother’s Union made lots of stoles for Lui clergy and sent them. So I’m thrilled to say that when we officially announce the November team next week, two of the missionaries will be from Blackmore Vale Deanery.

Things Sudan

I’m sitting in the Detroit airport, which is surprisingly familiar from the last Sudan mission. Today I’m on my way to England to attend a meeting of Blackmore Vale Deanery and discuss the possibility of a three-way relationship between us and Lui.

Even when Missouri isn’t actively preparing for a mission, there is always something happening on the companion diocese front. Recently we provided funds to buy a new generator because the old one had broken beyond repair. Our friend Stephen has been in Kampala to get a visa – he is attending a conference in Sweden next month. And our friend Margaret has been in Nairobi awaiting her US visa for studies at Eden, but she could not get an interview soon enough to start school this semester. (more…)

A Letter from Archbishop Daniel (2009)

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

http://www.sudan.anglican.org/jongleiappeal.php

On Saturday 29th August 2009 I received reports from Wernyol, Twic East County, Jonglei State, that there had been another attack on the peoples of the area in which over forty people – men, women and children – were killed. Amongst the dead were Ven. Joseph Mabior Garang, Archdeacon of Wernyol and Archbishop’s Commissary in the new Diocese of Twic East, who was shot at the altar of the church in Wernyol during a service of Morning Prayer. Tens of others have been wounded, some very seriously with gun-shot wounds and broken limbs. Only a few of these have been taken to Juba Military Hospital, whilst the rest are still in Bor Hospital.
