A Lenten Gift from St. Martin’s-Ellisville. This year forty-three parishioners contributed to a collection of 46 meditations. The daily readings cover the 40 days  – as well as the six Sundays — of the Lenten season. Mary Drastal contributed the original cover image; Ruby Downs and Janet Theiss produced the books in the church office. (more…)

Prayers and assistance for the people of Haiti

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

From the Presiding Bishop

The people of Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake, and it is already clear that many have died and many more are injured.  Even under “normal” circumstances, Haiti struggles to care for her 9 million people.  The nation is the poorest in the western hemisphere, and this latest disaster will set back many recent efforts at development.  I urge your prayers for those who have died, been injured, and are searching for loved ones – and I urge your concrete and immediate prayers in the form of contributions to Episcopal Relief & Development, who are already working with the Diocese of Haiti to send aid where it is most needed.

Updates on Flooding in Fargo-Moorhead from the Diocese of North Dakota (2009)

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Bishop Michael Smith and the people along the Red River of the North appreciate your continuing prayers. Bishop Smith’s most recent pastoral letter adds, “People from around the country are contacting us to be assured of their prayers during this battle with the Red River. I ask for those prayers to continue, specifically that the levees, dikes and sandbags will hold and for strength and protection for those on the front lines.”

Prayers and notes from around the country are being added to the diocesan blog. (more…)

Revised Diocesan Prayer Cycle (2009)

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Sometimes in a project’s life the well-intentioned beginning is weighed down with repeated revisions, to the point of becoming hard to remember its original purpose. This might be the case with the diocesan prayer cycle.

All parochially attached clergy were added to the cycle; then long lists of clergy somewhere in the Lui Diocese. As the lists kept growing, the internal project to check and double check spellings and all the associated clergy became quite the cottage industry.

Curiously, or maybe not so, few are the parishes that actually include the diocesan prayer cycle in Sunday prayers.

In form, we are going back to prayer book basics. (more…)

Prayers for our Friends in South Sudan (2009)

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

There are many horrific stories coming from the Sudan; details are often sparse and hard to process. Some recent articles from the national church:

The Rev. Mike Kinman posted Advocacy Action to Help the People of Lui and Mundri

The Rev. Dan Handschy, rector of Church of the Advent in Crestwood and part of the mission team that recently returned from Lui, has been in touch with the Episcopal Office of Government Relations in Washington and will continue to relay their counsel as to how we can best use our political power to pressure our government to enforce the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Our diocesan Mission team reported that they spoke with Lui Diocese secretary Vasco on 2/12. He is currently in Juba and thought we would want to know the following: (more…)

Knitting Ministry: The Story of the Christmas Scarves (2009)

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Last November we heard requests to the the knitters and crocheters of the Diocese to help with a scarf making project to distribute to patrons of Trinity-CWE’s soup kitchen. The in-gathering was at Diocesan convention, where the scarves were blessed by Bishop Smith during the closing Eucharist. We noticed an extraordinary number of scarves in the procession and asked the Rev. Lydia Speller to catch us up with the rest of the story.

She reported that usually these knitting projects attract about 90 participants. “To our amazement we collected almost 300 scarves from all over the Diocese of Missouri; from congregations large and small. The children of Scruggs School made holiday cards and Sue Healey made scarf ministry tags which said

This scarf was made with love and prayer by the people of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. As you wear this scarf know that you are wrapped in God’s love. (more…)

Prayer Request for Mundri, Lui, and Lozoh (2009)

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Debra Smith, one of our mission trip coordinators for the work of the Companion Diocese Committee reports (on 1/21): Today we found out from Lui Diocesan Secretary Vasco Tadu that people are fleeing the Mundri Diocese and going to Lozoh in the Diocese of Lui. Lozoh is Advent’s sister parish.

The situation in the Mundri diocese is bad, with the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) killing and kidnapping. Please pray for the people in the Mundri Diocese who are under attack, and the people in Lui Diocese, especially in Lozoh, who are taking care of IDPs (internally displaced persons) from Mundri.
