More resources for a Holy Lent

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

A Lenten Gift from St. Martin’s-Ellisville. This year forty-three parishioners contributed to a collection of 46 meditations. The daily readings cover the 40 days  – as well as the six Sundays — of the Lenten season. Mary Drastal contributed the original cover image; Ruby Downs and Janet Theiss produced the books in the church office. (more…)

Ashes to Go: Taking Liturgy into the Streets

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

This year, Ashes to Go will be available at the corner of Grand & Arsenal in south St. Louis City from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Ashes-to-Go is an ecumenical, short, Ash Wednesday service with imposition of ashes held on the corner of Grand and Arsenal streets in St. Louis. Now in its fourth year, clergy and laity from St. John’s Episcopal Church-Tower Grove participate. “South Grand neighborhood in the City of St. Louis is a perfect place to bring church to the streets,” says the Rev. Teresa Danieley, rector at St. John’s-Tower Grove. (more…)

Bishop Smith’s Message for Lent (2009)

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Some years ago I chose not to give up anything for Lent or to take on anything new; very unusual for me, having first come to the Episcopal Church during a Lenten season and fallen in love at first sight. The muted, realistic tones about sin and forgiveness I found there struck a deep chord in me, and Lenten disciplines became integral in my observance of the season. But the changes and chances of life during that more recent Lent were hard enough that practices added-on made no sense. The inner reality of struggle which I was experiencing matched the solemn realities of the season already—which in itself proved a great blessing. That year the resonance between my life and Lent, if anything, deepened my appreciation for the season.

My Benedictine friends at St. Gregory’s Monastery in Three Rivers, Michigan, change very little in their daily routine during Lent. Their life together is already pared down, their shared simplicity the usual source of their joy and their challenge. Lent gives them a time to reflect on a manner of life to which they are already committed. It think that such a thing happened to me outside the monastery, and happened unintentionally.

The sobering realities of an economy gone very bad bring these reflections to mind. Some of us have felt direct effects from the sharp decline. No one can escape the repercussions of it. Anxiety is in the air for almost everyone.

The realities of Lent and our lives at present may match up, in ways not of our own choosing. The prophets (and here I think especially of the latter part of Isaiah) suggest that the economies of God’s people have a way of focusing the spiritual awareness, no small thing. Which is to say that there may also be blessing out there for us, also not of our own choosing. Lent just might awaken us to such peculiar blessing.

I pray for us all, that we might have a good and holy Lent, during this hard season.

The Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith
Tenth Bishop of Missouri

Waters of Hope: An Opportunity for Lenten Discipline from Christ Church, Rolla (2009)

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

We are indebted to Fr. Larry Hooper for forwarding this letter from Christ Church Deacon Susan Bartlett.

On Friday, May 29, the fourth day of the Project, Christ Church, Rolla will be overnight hosts for the Waters of Hope Bicyclists. According to the Rev. Joe Chambers, the 100+ mile trek from Jefferson City to Rolla will be the toughest ride of the seven-day event. While we are thrilled to be one of the eight Waters of Hope host parishes in the diocese, Christ Church Rolla is equally as excited about our fundraising campaign for the Project.

During the Season of Lent, CEC will conduct a Waters of Hope Water Bottle Campaign. Beginning on Sunday, February 22, the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday, Waters of Hope Water Bottles will be available for parishioners to use during Lent. A minimum donation of $5 for each bottle is suggested. Each CEC family will also receive a Waters of Hope collection box.

During the forty days of Lent, we will drink tap water—not bottled water—to increase our awareness and gratitude for the clean water we take for granted every day. For each bottle of water we consume, we will put $.25 into our collection boxes.

At the Easter Vigil, we will bring our filled collection boxes to the service and place them on the altar. We will also bring our Waters of Hope Water Bottles filled with fresh water to pour into our Baptismal Font in preparation for baptism at the Service. (more…)
