13th Annual Gospel Jubilee at Ascension, 10-25 (2009)

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Beginning at 4:00 p.m., Church of the Ascension hosts this year’s Jubilee featuring groups from all around the St. Louis area and from several denominations. In addition to music from several styles, there will be gospel based spiritual skits. Ascension is located at 4520 Lucas & Hunt Road South of Highway 70 at Groveland. Great food is another Jubilee tradition, and will be served after the program. Georgia Harrell from Ascension’s Jubilee programming committee says, “We welcome everyone to come join us for an evening of spiritual uplift with prayers songs, and praise dancing. A free will offering will help support our Ministries, but this is not a fundraising event, this is a fellowship event!”

39th Annual Spring Luncheon, Christ Church-Rolla, 4/24 (2009)

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

The Episcopal Church Women have an annual spring luncheon to raise money for the church and other outreach programs. This is the 39th year. ECW makes donations to our local Russell House (womens shelter), GRACE (Greater Rolla Area Charitable Enterprise), Christ Church building fund (2004 -2009), and Christ Church Library among other things.

Parishioner Joan Aronstam writes, “There was some discussion about whether it was worth continuing this event this year. But it was unanimous; it serves to bring all the women in the church out to work together. Indeed, it is a fellowship event.”

ECW at Rolla is a small group that meets each month, but most of the women in the church help with the two big events, Holiday Cookie Walk Bazaar and the Spring Luncheon.

This year’s Luncheon is named “Salute to Salads.”

Living Room Prayers and Cracks in History: First “Conversation with the Bishop” (2009)

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

This past Saturday, January 24th, at Church of the Advent in Metro III Convocation we inaugurated our “Conversations with the Bishop” series. Letters of invitation from the Bishop’s office were sent to convocation Vestry, and the call went out for parishioners to sign up for one of the twenty group spots.

We are fortunate to have Barbara Fitzgerald, Trinity Church-Jefferson County parishioner and member of Trinity’s Bishop’s committee, to offer this account:

During our potluck lunch and prior to the conversations, Bishop Smith gave us a bit of background history on his childhood and youth in West Texas, living on his father’s cotton farm and then moving into a very small town.

After we had eaten a delicious meal and some of Bishop’s Smith wonderful homemade bread, we listened to his ideas on his vision for our Diocese. Bishop Smith spoke of “cracks in history” as those critical moments when things change. Moses lived at such a time, but he never saw the Promised Land, he came to the brink of it only. We may be in those times now. In order to make it through we must be willing to go out of our safety zones and find adventure in our churches. Leaving our comfort zones will bring us to awe, that place not far from fear, where we find God’s presence.

There were half a dozen churches represented at the meeting. These are some of the ideas that various church members brought into the discussion: (more…)
