Bishop Wayne Smith’s address to the 170th Diocesan Convention

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

One year ago I told you my plans for meeting with groups of laypeople and clergy, separately, to share a meal and to have leisurely conversation about the dreams and possibilities for our diocesan community. These conversations provided a structured yet  informal context for you to hear from me and, more importantly, for me to hear from you. There have been fourteen such conversations to date, involving more than two hundred diocesan leaders. The work goes on, but I can report three themes in what I have heard.

God is the giver of More.  More than we can ask or imagine. More than we deserve, (more…)

The Rev. Hope Benko reports on a recent Clergy Conversation with the Bishop (2009)

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Living Room Prayers and Cracks in History: First “Conversation with the Bishop” (2009)

Letters of invitation from the Bishop’s office were sent to convocation Vestry, and the call went out for parishioners to sign up for one of the twenty group spots.

We are fortunate to have Barbara Fitzgerald, Trinity Church-Jefferson County parishioner and member of Trinity’s Bishop’s committee, to offer this account:

During our potluck lunch and prior to the conversations, Bishop Smith gave us a bit of background history on his childhood and youth in West Texas, living on his father’s cotton farm and then moving into a very small town.

After we had eaten a delicious meal and some of Bishop’s Smith wonderful homemade bread, we listened to his ideas on his vision for our Diocese. Bishop Smith spoke of “cracks in history” as those critical moments when things change. Moses lived at such a time, but he never saw the Promised Land, he came to the brink of it only. We may be in those times now. In order to make it through we must be willing to go out of our safety zones and find adventure in our churches. Leaving our comfort zones will bring us to awe, that place not far from fear, where we find God’s presence.

There were half a dozen churches represented at the meeting. These are some of the ideas that various church members brought into the discussion: (more…)

Clergy Conversations with the Bishop (2009)

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

There will be five sessions in 2009 for clergy to get together with Bishop Smith for a luncheon and discussion of our vision for the Diocese.

These sessions are scheduled by convocation for convenience of travel and to keep the size of the group small enough to be meaningful. (more…)
