Bishop Wayne Smith’s address to the 170th Diocesan Convention

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

One year ago I told you my plans for meeting with groups of laypeople and clergy, separately, to share a meal and to have leisurely conversation about the dreams and possibilities for our diocesan community. These conversations provided a structured yet  informal context for you to hear from me and, more importantly, for me to hear from you. There have been fourteen such conversations to date, involving more than two hundred diocesan leaders. The work goes on, but I can report three themes in what I have heard.

Convention Volunteers wanted! (2009)

Might you have a family member or friend who could help out at diocesan convention this November 20-21 in Cape Girardeau?

We have a wish list that includes both high tech (helping run slide shows and presentations on the floor of convention) and low tech (greeters) and everything in between. Post General Convention “Hearing Session” with Bishop Wayne Smith and members of the Deputation from the Diocese of Missouri

In preparation for General Convention (GC) the Missouri deputation held three  ‘listening’ sessions as an opportunity to listen to what was on the hearts of the diocese before heading out to GC.  During GC, the diocese posted observations from staff in Anaheim and updates from here in St. Louis, and the deputation spent a great deal of time and energy in blogging at http://missourideputation.blogspot.com.  Now, after GC, we invite you to a  ‘hearing’ session, an opportunity to hear our deputation’s overview of the GC experience. Traveling to Triennial, the 2009 Convention of ECW (2009)

Sometimes the story of the Episcopal Church Women, their Triennial meeting, and our diocesan participation gets lost in the time leading up to General Convention.

This year Triennial convenes in Anaheim from July 8-17 with the convention theme of “Grow in Grace.” There are 45 workshops over the ten days, “designed to educate and enrich women’s lives in the areas of Leadership, Social Justice and Spirituality.” (more…)

Just in from the printer and soon to be mailed to recipients as specified by the Constitution and Canons; feel free to download your own copy.  This is from Diocesan convention 2007. The Journal from the 169th Convention in 2008 will be sent to the printer after the audited financial report is  delivered later this spring.

The Journals from 2000, 2001, and 2002 were sent to the printer today, after editing, and will be available in early April. The Journals outstanding are in the editing queue.

50 days prior to the meeting of Convention, Deadline for Nominations and Resolutions

Convocations review the preliminary budget and submit comments at least 30 days prior to the opening of the meeting of Convention at which the budget is to be approved.

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The questions I put before you today are these, and they are urgent:

In a time of economic crisis, what is God asking of us the Church in the Diocese of Missouri?

In a time when the Episcopal Church is in persistent decline, what is God asking of us the Church in the Diocese of Missouri?

The first of these questions requires little explanation for anyone paying attention to the news these days. The second, however, begs some background. So here are some numbers. (more…)
