Prayer Service and Vigil for Peace in Sudan during the Referendum

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

6-7 PM, Sat. Jan. 8, Christ Church Cathedral, Prayer Service
7 PM-12 NOON Saturday-Sunday, Your Location, Prayer
Vigil

This weekend residents of southern Sudan go to the polls to vote to remain a part of the sovereign nation of Sudan or to secede.

The vote will begin January 9 and continue through the 15th. This is the final piece of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended over twenty years of a brutal civil war.

What will happen next, and closer to our hearts, how will this affect our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Lui?

What can we do?

Prayer, and together as a community. Christ Church Cathedral is hosting a prayer service 6-7 PM Saturday evening, Jan. 8th. Sudan is nine hours ahead of Missouri, so our service and vigil begin before sunrise on the first day of voting.

Join a virtual vigil through the night (yes, you can wear your jammies) and into Sunday morning. Sign up for a time that you will be praying, then join us on Luinetwork to share prayers and petitions.

Take your prayers and petitions for peace in Sudan with you to church on Sunday morning, and into the week. Voting in Sudan will last through January 15th.

As always, if you encounter any difficulty with getting on to Luinetwork, or signing up for a vigil time, feel free to email or call Beth, bfelice@diocesemo.org, 314-398-2209.)

Debra Smith: While Sudan’s referendum occupies the world stage, everyday concerns remain a focus on the ground (ENS)

[Episcopal News Service] On the world stage, what has mattered most in Sudan for months now is next week’s referendum. But on the ground in Sudan, where the spotlight shines depends on where you are.

Back in November, I went to the Diocese of Lui of the Episcopal Church of Sudan (ECS) with a team from the Diocese of Missouri, which has had a companion relationship with Lui since 2006, and Lui’s other partners from the Blackmore Vale Deanery of Salisbury Diocese and the Diocese of Lund in the Church of Sweden. Lui Diocese, part of the Moru lands, is several hundred miles from the border with northern Sudan, and at least 100 miles from the southern capital, Juba, and from areas under attack by the Ugandan militia calling itself the Lord’s Resistance Army. These are long distances over seldom-graded dirt roads. (more…)

Sad News from the Diocese of Lui, Sudan

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Dec 11, 2010 12:21 AM, Nairobi

Greetings to you all in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ.

We are deeply sorry to inform you that our Diocesan Bishop,
Bishop Bullen A. Dolli has passed away early this morning.

Please pass this message to all Christians in your Diocese.

In Christ,

Stephen

The Rev. Stephen Dokolo
Secretary, Diocese of Lui, Episcopal Church of Sudan

“Bishop Bullen was a friend and colleague who repeatedly showed great courage, facing difficulties and dangers during his episcopate and before, for the sake of the Moru people,” said Wayne Smith, Bishop of Missouri. “His lively faith took root in the gospel of Jesus. May he rest in peace, and rise in the glory of Christ.”

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day
our brother Bullen. We thank you for giving him to us, his
family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on
our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion,
console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate
of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue
our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with
those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Notes for the Journey: the Lui Children’s Art Project from the Rev. Anne Kelsey (2009)

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

When I first met Bishop Bullen Dolli at the fall convention of the Diocese of Missouri in 2005, I told him as much out of politeness as anything else, that I would like to go to Lui. His reaction wasn’t a conventional response; it was, “When will you come?” I never really expected it to happen. I was the rector of Trinity, served on Diocesan Council, and had much to keep me more than busy as it was. Southern Sudan was a world away, literally, and I did not think that I had anything much to offer on any kind of mission trip. Then Bishop Smith called and asked if I would go to Lui with him, the Canon to the Ordinary the Rev. Dan Smith, and the President of Standing Committee, Ida Early, in April of 2006. We would be formally representing the Diocese of Missouri and signing the Covenant agreement between the two dioceses. AFRECS Exhibit booth to celebrate the Missouri-Lui partnership on July 15 in Anaheim (2009)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The Companion Diocese Committee (especially Sandy Coburn & Debbie Smith) have been working hard for several months to collaborate with AFRECS, the American Friends of the Episcopal Church in Sudan, to create display materials that highlight our relationship with the Diocese of Lui, Sudan. Our gathering every three years at General Convention is a powerful time to share knowledge and enthusiasm about our partnerships; in addition to the Bishops and diocesan deputations, attendees at the ECW Triennial, the Anaheim convention hall will be filled with people and organizations representing the work large and small of the church. AFRECS will have booth #357 in the exhibit hall during General Convention. (more…)

Prayer Request for Mundri, Lui, and Lozoh (2009)

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Debra Smith, one of our mission trip coordinators for the work of the Companion Diocese Committee reports (on 1/21): Today we found out from Lui Diocesan Secretary Vasco Tadu that people are fleeing the Mundri Diocese and going to Lozoh in the Diocese of Lui. Lozoh is Advent’s sister parish.

The situation in the Mundri diocese is bad, with the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) killing and kidnapping. Please pray for the people in the Mundri Diocese who are under attack, and the people in Lui Diocese, especially in Lozoh, who are taking care of IDPs (internally displaced persons) from Mundri.
