“I am not sure I raised a dime for clean water in the Diocese of Lui, but I laughed, I cussed, I got wet, I shared hugs, I prayed, and I was touched by many of you and by many of the WOH riders,” Reflections from Trinity-Kirksville (2009)

The Day It Rained

by Krista Baker, Senior Warden

On Tuesday, May 26 it rained. The day began with a call from (Rector) Wallace. He tried to sound calm. The Waters of Hope bicyclists were coming to Kirksville, and he was concerned we would not have enough food. It rained. We prepared plenty of food. It rained.

Tuesday ended very late with Tim trying to spell “pimiento” cheese. He was patiently labeling sandwich bags for me as we prepared lunches for the next day. In between that first phone call and that last sandwich, I had a wonderful day full of great memory making moments. I am not sure I raised a dime for clean water in the Diocese of Lui, but I laughed, I cussed, I got wet, I shared hugs, I prayed, and I was touched by many of you and by many of the WOH riders. “WoH became that moment when we were in communion,” Reflections from Grace-Jeff City (2009)

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

originally published in Grace Episcopal Church, Jefferson City’s newsletter, The Messenger. Author is Lisa Fox,  photo taken by Melanie Jianakoplosof parishioners Matt Krause and Jeanie Bryant.

Seven days.  650 miles.  Some 40 bicyclists traversed the hills and valleys of eastern Missouri to raise money for clean water in Sudan and Swaziland from May 25-31.  And the members of Grace Episcopal Church played a key role in that initiative.

When the Waters of Hope cyclists cruised into the parish, their arrival was the culmination of several weeks of anticipation and preparation.  Jeanie Bryant (Chair of the Community Ministry Committee) expressed joy: “When the riders came spinning down High Street to our little corner of the world, they were greeted as brothers and sisters in Christ.  As they shared their stories of travel, we expanded our horizons.” (more…)

Celebration of the New Ministry of the Rev. Shariya Molegoda

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

A packed church celebrated the new ministry of the Rev. Shariya Molegoda which was held on January 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m., at Grace Episcopal Church, Jefferson City. Bishop Wayne Smith presided at the beautiful celebration, the Rev. Marshall Crossnoe served as Deacon and Bishop’s Chaplain and Lisa Fox served as sub-deacon.

Shariya is a life-long Anglican who was born and raised in Sri Lanka. Her early Christian formation occurred in an Anglo-Catholic parish and in an Anglican school in which daily worship was an integral component. This early formation shaped the way she approaches parish ministry. She believes worship informs and shapes the rest of a community’s common life and that in worship we are most formed and fed – and equipped for the task of sharing the joy and hope that is within us with the world.

Prior to becoming a priest, Shariya was an ecologist with a Masters of Science from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and a doctoral candidate in the school of forest resources at the University of Georgia. Instead of doing a dissertation, she entered Seminary at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and received her Masters of Divinity in 1993.

That year she entered the Society of St. Margaret in Roxbury, Massachusetts, as a novice and later became a Sister in Annual Profession as she continued her preparation for ordination. Since her ordination to the priesthood in 1997, she has served as assistant to the rector, associate rector, priest-in-charge and interim rector in four churches in Massachusetts.
