Being Church in the 21st Century: Diocesan Leadership Conference set for March 5, 2011

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Saturday, March 5, 2011,
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Registration begins at 8:30)
St. Martin’s, Ellisville.

Not to be missed is this year’s annual Leadership Conference for clergy and lay members of the diocese on March 5th. This year the diocesan Standing Committee is organizing the conference around the the theme Being Church in the 21st Century.

Keynote and lead presenter will be Sabine McDowell. In addition to creating http://ourgreenchoices.com where she writes about the simple steps that churches, schools, and other nonprofit organizations can take to save energy and save emissions, Sabine is a member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and is LEED AP certified. She is co chair of the Creation Care Ministry at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood, and she serves on the Climate Action Task Force for City of Creve Coeur. And she loves to talk about all things sustainable.

More About Being Church in the 21st Century

Sabine will give a brief overview of the crisis of climate change and choices we’ve made to get us to this point, and how as Places of Faith we can and need to alleviate suffering through a better understanding of those choices. She will present information to congregations about no-cost energy audits, low-cost changes, and upgrades to save energy costs and lower the impact on our environment– which is God’s gift to all of us.

After Sabine’s presentation we will engage in an in-depth conversation regarding how “being green” is linked to our mission of Making Disciples, Building Congregations, for the Life of The World.
The afternoon workshop will be an expanded version of the diocesan convention presentation on Parish Nursing.  Presenters include Dan Handschy, rector of Advent Episcopal in Crestwood, and Deb Goldfeder, R.N., and Advent’s parish nurse. They’ll include basic how-tos for setting up a nursing ministry for a neighborhood or community.

Conference attendees will also gauge their interest in a possible diocesan collaboration for funding parish nursing. Additionally, ways to discern and assess the needs of your community and how to garner resources in your congregation will be discussed.
