Arthur Steidemann and Alan Paton, 1972, Natal, South Africa
One pivotal trip Arthur Steidemann, former rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood, made was to Natal in South Africa. Missouri’s Bishop George Cadigan had designated a companion diocese relationship with Natal. Steidemann’s trip in 1972 was preceded by several clergy and lay exchanges including one with David Poynton, Anglican priest, in training for the position of Director of Education for the Anglican Church of South Africa. On Wednesday, September 16th, the diocese welcomed the Rev. Todd McDowell as the fourteenth rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood with a Celebration of New Ministry.
The Sermon was preached by the Very Rev. Zachary Fleetwood, the ninth Dean of the American Cathedral in Paris. The Cathedral of Paris is relatively the same age as Grace and Fleetwood assured us that on this night they were celebrating with us and with their former Canon Vicar who had served with great distinction. Fleetwood continued, “Todd McDowell has a heart for ministry, a passion for the Gospel, and a love for the church…The spirit of God is in our midst tonight.”

Melanie West Jianakoplos, Postulant for Holy Orders, graduate of Mizzou and ECM in Columbia, just left for the Philippines for a year with Young Adult Service Corp of the Episcopal Church. She’ll be using her newly minted Bachelor in Non-Profit Management Degree to help a women’s group on island of Luzon in the Philippines. This group grows organic pineapples, processes them into jams, and then sells the jam. It has become a great source of livelihood for their community, which they fight to bring out of poverty every day. (more…)

This past Saturday, January 24th, at Church of the Advent in Metro III Convocation we inaugurated our “Conversations with the Bishop” series. Letters of invitation from the Bishop’s office were sent to convocation Vestry, and the call went out for parishioners to sign up for one of the twenty group spots.
We are fortunate to have Barbara Fitzgerald, Trinity Church-Jefferson County parishioner and member of Trinity’s Bishop’s committee, to offer this account:
During our potluck lunch and prior to the conversations, Bishop Smith gave us a bit of background history on his childhood and youth in West Texas, living on his father’s cotton farm and then moving into a very small town.
After we had eaten a delicious meal and some of Bishop’s Smith wonderful homemade bread, we listened to his ideas on his vision for our Diocese. Bishop Smith spoke of “cracks in history” as those critical moments when things change. Moses lived at such a time, but he never saw the Promised Land, he came to the brink of it only. We may be in those times now. In order to make it through we must be willing to go out of our safety zones and find adventure in our churches. Leaving our comfort zones will bring us to awe, that place not far from fear, where we find God’s presence.
There were half a dozen churches represented at the meeting. These are some of the ideas that various church members brought into the discussion: (more…)
