The Eucharist is the central act of worship for the Christian community. It is the heart of Christian practice and the soul of Christian living. Learning to pray the Eucharist, then, becomes the primary means of Christian formation for every person and provides a regular opportunity for contemplative practice in a community setting.

Watch with Me One Hour: excerpt from Church of the Advent’s newsletter, The Scroll (April 2010), by the Rev. Dan Handschy, rector of Advent, and chaplain to the missioners on our most recent trip to Lui in November 2009.
When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, he asked Peter, James and John to stay awake with him while he prayed. Whenever a person is faced with a difficult situation, it helps to know that others are praying, too.
On our most recent trip to Lui, one of the missioners became very ill, most likely with giardia, (a parasite) which not only messes with a person’s digestion, it also makes a person feel depressed and anxious. The missioner felt not only physically miserable, but emotionally terrified. She had a long night ahead of her. We asked if she wanted us to pray with her. The bishop took the lead, and we all laid hands on her while he prayed. Then, I asked her if she would like someone to sit with her through the night. With tears, she said yes. (more…)

By James Wagner
Returning from Lui last Christmas, Fr. Dan Handschy, Rector of Church of the Advent, in Crestwood, described part of his experience there in words not found in the everyday Episcopal lexicon. Dan shared that he’d had a conversion experience.
For the Advent community, life began to change. Dan told the congregation that he expected that by the end of 2009 at least 30% of the congregation would be involved in hands-on ministry beyond the people and walls of Advent. Dan’s enthusiasm for mission has been so contagious that by mid-2009, the 30% goal was met and continues to grow. Members are volunteering at Feed My People and Ronald McDonald House, serving as listening guests at a nursing home, and a variety of other individual mission endeavors. (more…)

This past Saturday, January 24th, at Church of the Advent in Metro III Convocation we inaugurated our “Conversations with the Bishop” series. Letters of invitation from the Bishop’s office were sent to convocation Vestry, and the call went out for parishioners to sign up for one of the twenty group spots.
We are fortunate to have Barbara Fitzgerald, Trinity Church-Jefferson County parishioner and member of Trinity’s Bishop’s committee, to offer this account:
During our potluck lunch and prior to the conversations, Bishop Smith gave us a bit of background history on his childhood and youth in West Texas, living on his father’s cotton farm and then moving into a very small town.
After we had eaten a delicious meal and some of Bishop’s Smith wonderful homemade bread, we listened to his ideas on his vision for our Diocese. Bishop Smith spoke of “cracks in history” as those critical moments when things change. Moses lived at such a time, but he never saw the Promised Land, he came to the brink of it only. We may be in those times now. In order to make it through we must be willing to go out of our safety zones and find adventure in our churches. Leaving our comfort zones will bring us to awe, that place not far from fear, where we find God’s presence.
There were half a dozen churches represented at the meeting. These are some of the ideas that various church members brought into the discussion: (more…)
