Clive Driskill-Smith in St. Louis, Feb. 25th

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Do you remember last spring’s volcano eruption in Iceland that shut down Europe’s air corridors for weeks*? The people of St. Mark’s in St. Louis do. The culmination of the building and installation process of the new organ was to be celebrated with a dedicatory recital by world renowned artist Clive Driskill-Smith, who was stuck on the tarmac in the U.K.

The recital has been rescheduled to 7:30 PM Friday, Feb. 25th.

Driskill-Smith, organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, England, will play his original recital program planned for the April dedication. The program will include works by English composers Sir William Harris and Charles Villiers Stanford, French composers Cesar Franck and Marcel Dupre, and contemporary Swiss composer Guy Bovet, as well as Bach and Mozart. The recital is cosponsored by the St. Louis Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

The tracker design organ was built by the Canadian firm of Juget-Sinclair Organ builders and is their first instrument in Missouri. It’s receiving rave reviews by previous recitalists for the quality of workmanship in both visual effect as well as sound. The organ was largely funded by a bequest from parishioner Ruth Proehl.

St. Mark’s is located at 4714 Clifton Ave. in St. Louis Hills just west of the intersection of Hampton Ave. and Nottingham. For further information call the church at 314-832-3588. Admission: Free. Disabled Access at East Entrance.

* The Icelandic volcano takes its name from the glacier it lies beneath, Eyjafjallajokull . Extra points if you can pronounce it.
