One Hundred Years of Worship and Service: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Portland, MO, 1910 – 2010

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Portland, Missouri, held its first services in a brand new building in April, 1910, continuing the Christian and Episcopalian witness and ministry offered in Portland by the St. Mark’s School for Boys from 1890 to 1899.

St. Mark’s celebrated their Centennial Sunday this past Sunday, April 18, 2010. The commemoration of the first service in St. Mark’s Church included clergy who have served St. Mark’s, Holy Eucharist and Luncheon, and a special presentation from state representative Jeanie Riddle of a Courtesy Resolution from the State of Missouri House of Representatives.

For one hundred years, faithful members of St. Mark’s Church have offered Christian worship and loving service to and with her neighbors in Portland. From the beginning, worship at St. Mark’s has been led and supported primarily by lay members and friends. Most Sunday services have been led by lay readers who are members of St. Mark’s, and sometimes by visiting lay leaders from Jefferson City, Fulton, or Columbia. Ordained priests in the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri have historically led services once a month. Sunday School began at St. Mark’s during the early 1950s. Before that time, children from St. Mark’s attended a community Sunday School hosted and led by members of Portland Baptist Church.

Through the years, St. Mark’s parishioners have been actively involved in Portland community life, including

  • service in (and leadership of) the Portland Community Center Association;
  • service in (and leadership of) the Portland Cemetery Association; and
  • leadership of the Annual Portland Day Celebration (the second Saturday in June).

Since the church’s foundation, over 600 individuals have been baptized at St. Mark’s, and approximately 265 have been confirmed. It is with joyous and humble gratitude to God, to our predecessors at St. Mark’s over the past one hundred years, to our diocesan leaders and supporters, and to our neighbors in Portland and mid-Missouri that we celebrate our centennial this year.
