Religion and Film, resource lists and fora

Many (most?) parishes in the diocese seem to be sponsoring movie nights, often choosing films with themes related to faith, not only for their entertainment value, but to inspire ongoing conversations.

Arts and Faith, Top 100 List of Films

Matthew Lee Anderson blogged in the Post-Dispatch about an interesting “top 100″ list of films from Arts & Faith, Bridging Faith and Imagination,  a magazine (Image), blog, forum, and lively community.

Showcasing top films and directors from around the world and spanning cinematic history from silent movies (F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise, 1927) to films currently in theaters (the Coen Brothers’ Oscar-nominated A Serious Man), the list is the culmination of years of discussion and debate within the Arts & Faith online community. Titles are hyperlinked to more information, including links, video clips, and reviews written by the Arts & Faith community.

Be sure to visit the forums for discussion areas of faith and: film, music, literature, theater, dance, television, radio, architecture, design, and visual art.

Religion in Film – A List of Films for the Religious Studies Classroom

Fontbonne Religious Studies prof and frequent author on film, the arts, and biblical studies in an array of magazines and journals, M. Leary, has blogged another list on Filmwell.  His list includes “films that we leave with a greater sense of why and how people practice the nuts of bolts of religion, which are talk in terms of rites of passage, ritual, doctrine, sacred time and space, etc…”

One Response to “Religion and Film, resource lists and fora”

  1. DALE VEERHUSEN says:

I was disappointed but not surprised that an EXCELLENT but somewhat obscure film “MIRACLES” w Nick Conti and Terri Garr was not included in your 100 list. “MIRACLES” shows how GOD writes straight with crooked llines. It it shows a couple progressing from taking GOD’s name in vain to appealing to GOD. Miracles also shows the danger of a priest saying he does not believe in miracles.
