The 117th annual Flower Festival will be celebrated at Christ Church Cathedral on May 2-3, 2009. We are pleased to announce the Festival sermon will be preached by the Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel. Rickel was consecrated bishop on September 15, 2007; the eighth Bishop of Olympia. The Episcopal Diocese of Olympia occupies the western third of Washington state, from the Cascades to the Pacific Ocean, from Canada to Oregon. Bishop Rickel was the Episcopal representative to the Earth Charter discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, in the late 1990s, and is currently a presenter for the Climate Project and an outspoken advocate of our environment. You can read more about Bishop Rickel at the Diocese of Olympia site or at his blog.
Flower Festival origins
Missouri Botanical Garden founder Henry Shaw stipulated in his will that an annual sermon be preached “on the wisdom and goodness of God as shown in the growth of flowers, fruits and other products of the vegetable kingdom” at Christ Church Cathedral. The Gardens, the Cathedral, and the Diocese partner each year to sponsor this celebration. Read more about the history and previous Flower Festivals at the Cathedral’s website.
