The Diocese of Missouri has entered into a companion relationship with the Diocese of Lui in southern Sudan in Africa. Some of our churches have paired up with parishes in Lui for instance, Advent, Crestwood with Lozoh Parish. We have successfully raised funds and drilled 6 wells in the Diocese of Lui this year!! And, we just received a UTO (United Thank Offering) Grant for $19,200 towards a grinding mill for the Mother's Union in Lui. About the Diocese of LuiThe Diocese was originally a Church Missionary Society station started in 1920 by Dr. Kenneth Grant Frazer, from Scotland. The Diocese was created in Northern Sudan - Khartoum in 1996 by the late Bishop Ephraim A Natana but unfortunately, he died and was buried in Khartoum. The Diocese was established in Lui, Southern Sudan, 11 April 1999, when Bishop Bullen Dolli was consecrated as the first bishop amongst Moru people. It is a new Diocese with a population of about 175,000, 25 parishes, and seven archdeaconries, 38 clergy, 50 Mother's Union ministers. The means of transport is bicycle. The cathedral in Lui was bombed by the Sudanese government in the recent civil war. Bishop Bullen was forced to flee and set up administrative offices in Nairobi, Kenya. For our Companion Diocese Agreement: Covenant with the Diocese of Lui For information on Southern Sudan and its development go here: http://www.southsudanmaps.org/ Viewing Satellite Images of LuiLui does not show up by name on Google Maps, but Mundri does. The River Yei is an obvious landmark, as is the landing strip just east of the river. Notice that it crosses the road. Then the Amadi Junction is a bit to the northeast from there. Follow the southeast fork to find Lui. http://tinyurl.com/2zrewt
And here is Lui itself, although unmarked on the map. The Cathedral is visible at the center of the screen, just west of the road. http://tinyurl.com/29q9zq

In the Area of Wells and BoreholesTaking our (.7 of 1%),Diocesan Millennium Development Goals Funds, and combining that with the wonderfully generous donations from Churches, Emmanuel's Men's Group, and many individuals, the Diocese of Missouri has drilled 6 boreholes in the past year. St. Martin's, Ellisville just sponsored a Walk for Water in Sudan, which raised $19,000.(A well costs $17,000 each to drill.) Companion Diocese CommitteeLisa Fox, from Grace Church, Jefferson City has been appointed by Bishop George Wayne Smith to be the chair for the Companion Diocese Committee, replacing the Rev. Susan Naylor. Both Fox and Naylor have traveled to Sudan on mission trips. The Missouri Diocese has sent over 20 missioners to Lui since 2004, and plans to send one group each year. There is a Lui Children's Art Project Mission Trip planned for 2009. The Archdeacon for Sudan, the Ven. Robert Franken has submitted this report from his latest trip to Lui, Sudan: Lui Trip Report In 2006, Deb Goldfeder from Advent (Crestwood) spent Dec. 1st through May 31st teaching nursing skills and facilitating reconciliation sessions amongst the Moru people. Please visit her blog at http://advent-episcopal.org/blog03/. Deb was one of the chaperones who spent time with the Archbishop of Sudan and his wife Mama Deborah on their recent visit here May 1-4th. Here are some reflections from Deb on the Archbishop's incredible visit to Episcopal City Mission's youth in detention program, sponsored in part, by the Diocese of Missouri: Archbishop Daniel's Visit Lui BlogsMike Kinman's - http://www.revmikek.blogspot.com/ Deb Goldfeder's - http://advent-episcopal.org/blog03/ 2006 Missioners' - http://luinotes.blogspot.com
