The Bishop is the ecclesiastical authority of the Diocese of Missouri. Our diocese is governed by the Bishop working in conjunction with the Diocesan Convention which meets annually, Diocesan Council and Standing Committee which meet throughout the year, the General Convention which meets every three years, and bound by the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Missouri (2/2009) and the Constitution and Canons of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America (2006).
Key Elements of Governance
Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. The 169th Convention was held Nov. 21-22, 2008, at Christ Church Cathedral, St Louis. The 170th convention will take place in Cape Girardeau, Nov. 20-21, 2009.
The Diocesan Council does the work of the Diocesan Convention when Convention is not in session, including development of the Program Budget and oversight of the programs and offices funded by the budget as well as oversight and interpretation of diocesan policies.
Standing Committee is a council of advice to the Bishop and acts as the ecclesiastical authority in the event that the office of bishop is vacant or the bishop is incapacitated. Members also serve as members of the Corporation of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri (COEDMO)
The Convocations serve as liaisons between the Diocesan Council and the congregations and propose resolutions to be considered by the Diocesan Convention.
Every three years the General Convention of the Episcopal Church meets to set the agenda for the Church for next three years and beyond through legislation, creation of a budget, election of leaders, and debate on issues.
