Education for Ministry - EFM

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of theological education by extension developed and administered by the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). It includes both individual study and group work in seminars under the guidance of trained mentors. The goal of EfM is to prepare lay persons to live out, by word and deed, the promises made at baptism--to love God, to serve Christ, and to proclaim the Gospel

EfM participants work with both the Old and New Testament, biblical exegesis, systematic theology, church history, ethics, liturgics, ascetical theology, and contemporary theological issues. In the seminar groups they share the stories of their faith journeys and reflect on issues from their lives, their ministries and their studies. The program is designed to enable group members to make connections between biblical tradition, studied personal experience, their own ministries, and the world in which they live. Through the shared life and study of the seminar group, insights and learning lead to both increased knowledge and spiritual growth. While there are "no tests and no papers", participants arrive prepared to discuss their weekly lesson and participate in a variety of theological reflections.

The program takes four years to complete. Participants register for only one year at a time and are not committing themselves to the entire four year program. It is not unusual for participants to skip a year or more for various reasons and rejoin the program at a later date. It is also possible to continue the program in other dioceses if the participant relocates. Upon completion of the EfM program participants are awarded a graduation certificate. Eighteen continuing education units are also awarded for each completed year of the program.

Supported by the Diocese of Missouri, EfM groups meet at several locations one day or evening each week for three hours. There is a fee. Textbooks are provided.
